I think you have a million dollar idea here… But I seriously struggle with this for my future daughters. Disney needs some bad-ass princesses for the new millennium. Those who are feminists and fight for their principles and aren’t always just passing out and needing to be rescued. This is why Belle is legit. She has her own mind, won’t compromise, and fights for what she believes in. Take that, Sleeping Beauty/Cinderella/Snow White!

Both my daughter and son are obsessed with the princesses. Each time we read an Ariel story, my daughter says: Mamma, Prince Eric isn’t very duktig, is he?

We talk a lot about being “dramatic” and making better choices. I don’t know if that has helped or not, but now my daughter know, if someone comes up to you in the woods and tells you that you are beautiful–run like hell!!

I think (Barbie’s boyfriend) Ken and his ilk are from the same camp as the Disney princes. Their hair is too tidy, their clothes a little too stylish and gay, no body hair, etc. They are the sudsy clean, testosterone-free versions of male characters. Totally non-threatening to a young girl’s delicate disposition. Maybe modern-day eunuchs?
